The 2027 Grammy Awards will introduce five categories that broaden recognition across pop, R&B, folk and Latin music. Two additions carry particular international importance: Best Asian Pop Music Performance gives Asian-language pop a dedicated place within the main Grammy system, while Best Latin Song creates a specific award for songwriters working predominantly in Spanish. These changes do not guarantee greater representation on their own, and they do not cover every musical tradition associated with Asia or Latin America. They do, however, alter how eligible recordings can be submitted, compared and rewarded. The distinctions are especially important because the Asian category honours performers, whereas the Latin category honours songwriters. Understanding the eligibility rules therefore matters more than simply noting the new category names.
The Recording Academy announced the changes on 16 June 2026 for the 69th Annual Grammy Awards, scheduled for 7 February 2027. The five additions take the total number of Grammy categories from 95 at the 2026 ceremony to 100 for 2027. Recordings eligible for the coming awards must have been released between 31 August 2025 and 28 August 2026, while the online entry period runs from 7 July to 21 August 2026. This timetable is important because, as of July 2026, no nominees have been announced. The official nominations are due on 16 November 2026, so any lists of supposed nominees or favourites published before then should be treated as predictions rather than confirmed information.
The new awards are Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album and Best Latin Song. Two existing categories have also been renamed to create clearer distinctions. Best R&B Performance becomes Best R&B Solo Performance because collaborative and group recordings now have their own award. Best Folk Album becomes Best Contemporary Folk Album, allowing traditional and contemporary approaches to be judged separately. These are not merely cosmetic changes: they alter the competitive groups in which recordings are assessed and clarify who receives a nomination or statuette.
The Recording Academy describes the annual revision process as member-led, with proposals coming from music creators and industry professionals before approval by its Board of Trustees. The 2027 changes reflect several different concerns rather than a single attempt to increase the category count. Asian pop receives recognition as a distinct contemporary pop form, Latin songwriters gain a dedicated genre award, R&B collaborations no longer compete directly with solo performances, and traditional pop and folk receive more precise definitions. The result is a more detailed awards map, although every new boundary also creates questions about recordings that sit between languages, markets or styles.
Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance is designed for contemporary R&B recordings by established duos, groups or collaborating acts. The focus remains on the performance, and eligible music may include pop, hip-hop or electronic influences while staying clearly rooted in R&B. Solo recordings move into the renamed Best R&B Solo Performance category. This separation should make comparisons more coherent because a solo vocal interpretation and a multi-artist collaboration often depend on different creative strengths, including vocal interplay, arrangement and the balance between performers.
Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance covers singles and tracks rather than full albums. It is intended for vocal performances that do not fit comfortably beside current mainstream pop, including material connected with the Great American Songbook, classic popular forms, cabaret and musical theatre traditions. Best Traditional Folk Album addresses another long-standing classification problem by separating community-rooted folk structures and traditional forms from the broader contemporary folk category. The renamed Best Contemporary Folk Album can now accommodate modern narrative approaches, indie folk, folk rock and newer production methods without forcing them into direct comparison with recordings built around inherited traditions.
The identity of the recipient also differs between the five awards. The Asian pop, R&B collaboration and traditional pop categories reward the performing artist or artists. Best Latin Song is specifically a songwriter’s award. Best Traditional Folk Album can recognise eligible artists, producers, engineers, mixers and songwriters who meet the required contribution threshold. Alongside these additions, the Academy is expanding recognition for songwriters and composers of new material on winning albums in most genre album categories, bringing their treatment closer to that of qualifying producers and engineers. This wider credit policy may matter as much as the new category names because it changes whose work is formally acknowledged.
Best Asian Pop Music Performance is a vocal category for singles or individual tracks within the Pop and Dance/Electronic field. It covers contemporary popular music that originates from, or is widely recognised within, Asian markets. The official description names K-pop, J-pop and C-pop as examples but does not limit eligibility to those labels. The award goes to the performing artist or artists, not automatically to the songwriters, producers or other contributors. Positioning the award within a pop field is significant because it treats Asian pop as a developed branch of contemporary popular music rather than placing every eligible recording under a broad international heading.
Language is one of the decisive requirements. A recording must make meaningful use of at least one Asian language, either throughout the song or as a substantial part of a bilingual or multilingual structure. A few isolated words, short phrases or ad-libs are not enough. A song performed entirely in English cannot enter this category, even when it is released by an Asian artist or becomes a major hit in an Asian market. At the same time, ethnicity and nationality do not determine eligibility. The Academy states that musical style is the deciding factor, meaning the category is based on the recording itself rather than the identity of the performer.
This creates a new route for recordings that might previously have competed in general pop or global music categories, where they were judged against a much wider range of styles. Asian acts have already earned nominations in established Grammy categories, so the addition should not be read as their first possible access to the awards. Its practical value lies in creating a peer group defined by the artistic conventions, markets and language use associated with Asian pop. That may improve the chance that production choices, vocal delivery and performance design are evaluated in context, although a dedicated category does not ensure nominations, wins or equal visibility during the televised ceremony.
The phrase “including but not limited to” leaves room for music beyond the three examples named in the rules. Pop recordings associated with South Asia, Southeast Asia and other regional markets could qualify when they meet the musical and language criteria. However, the award is not intended to contain every popular recording made in Asia or by members of the Asian diaspora. Rock, rap, electronic, folk and experimental works that do not fit the stated Asian pop definition should still be entered in other appropriate categories. This distinction may prevent the new award from becoming a catch-all, but it also places considerable responsibility on the eligibility screening process.
The language rule will influence release and entry decisions. An English-only single by a Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Filipino or Indian act is not eligible simply because of the artist’s background. A multilingual track can qualify only when an Asian language plays a clearly identifiable role. The rules also state that only one version of a recording may be entered in a performance category during the same year. A team cannot place an English version in one performance category and use a different Asian-language version of the same recording to secure a second route into Best Asian Pop Music Performance. This closes an obvious loophole but makes version selection more consequential.
Accurate credits, release dates and category choices will therefore be essential during submission. The 2027 rules also introduce Ballot Plus, an optional voting arrangement that allows qualified members with verified credits across several genres to vote in as many as 15 related categories. Members who do not use it remain under the standard voting structure. In principle, broader verified expertise could help recordings with cross-market or multilingual characteristics reach voters who understand their context. The effect cannot be measured before the first ballot is completed, however, and the quality of the outcome will still depend on who participates, how entries are screened and how carefully members assess unfamiliar work.

Best Latin Song is an award for the writers of newly created songs released during the current eligibility year. To qualify, at least 51 per cent of the lyrics must be in Spanish. The statuette goes to the credited songwriter or songwriters, not automatically to the performing artist. A singer receives the award only when that person also has an eligible songwriting credit. This distinction mirrors the difference between the Grammys’ general Song of the Year and Record of the Year awards: one recognises composition, while the other includes performance and recording production. The new Latin category is therefore concerned with melody, lyrics and song construction rather than the commercial profile of the performer.
The category can include Latin pop, música mexicana, música urbana, tropical Latin music, Latin rock and alternative music, as well as other qualifying Latin styles. It is intentionally broad in genre but narrow in its language threshold. Spanish-dominant bilingual songs can be eligible, while songs whose Spanish content falls below 51 per cent cannot. Predominantly Portuguese-language releases are also outside this particular category unless they contain enough Spanish to meet the rule. That limitation is notable because Brazilian and other Portuguese-language music forms are central to the wider Latin music landscape, yet the new main Grammy award is defined specifically around Spanish-language songwriting.
Until this change, the main Grammy Latin field contained album awards for established genre groups but no dedicated award for an individual Latin song’s writers. The addition gives composers and lyricists a direct route to recognition without requiring a full album to win. It also arrives after Bad Bunny’s Spanish-language album DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS won Album of the Year at the 2026 Grammys, a result that demonstrated the growing place of Spanish-language work in the general field. Best Latin Song remains separate from the Latin Grammy Awards, which have their own categories, membership and eligibility framework covering a wider range of Spanish, Portuguese and Indigenous-language music.
The two internationally focused additions solve different problems. Best Asian Pop Music Performance evaluates a finished vocal performance and rewards the artist, with style, market recognition and meaningful Asian-language use shaping eligibility. Best Latin Song evaluates newly written material and rewards its writers, with a clear Spanish-language threshold but no single required Latin genre. Asian producers and labels will need to decide which recording version best represents the performance, while Latin publishers and management teams will need to ensure that every songwriting credit is complete and that the lyric balance meets the rule. The categories may appear parallel, but their purposes and recipients are not the same.
Other 2027 rule changes may also affect international creators. Best New Artist can now receive an artist’s submission up to four times rather than three, offering more flexibility to acts whose careers develop gradually across several markets. The minimum share of new recordings required for eligible albums has been reduced from 75 to 66 per cent. Ballot Plus may allow some experienced voters to participate across a wider selection of related categories after their professional credits have been verified. None of these measures is limited to Asian or Latin music, but each can influence how globally active artists, writers and record companies prepare releases and entries.
The five new categories represent a meaningful adjustment, not a complete answer to questions of global representation. Best Asian Pop Music Performance does not cover every Asian genre and excludes English-only recordings, while Best Latin Song leaves predominantly Portuguese material outside its Spanish-based definition. The most reliable assessment will come after the nominations on 16 November 2026 and the awards on 7 February 2027, when it becomes possible to see the range of submitted work recognised by voters. For now, the clearest change is structural: Asian-language pop performers and Spanish-language Latin songwriters will enter the 2027 Grammy season with dedicated awards that did not exist a year earlier.
