How the EU AI Act Is Changing Online Casinos in 2026: Personalisation, Bonuses and Player Protection

Artificial intelligence now supports customer service, content selection and marketing across many digital businesses. For online casinos serving users in the EU, 2026 is important because the AI Act became broadly applicable on 2 August. It does not create separate casino bonus rules, but it sets limits on certain AI uses and introduces transparency duties that can affect player-facing services.

Personalisation Has Clearer Boundaries

The AI Act does not ban personalisation. Operators may use automated tools to organise content, suggest categories or adapt communications. Problems arise when AI uses manipulative or deceptive techniques that impair informed decision-making and are likely to cause significant harm.

The distinction matters in practice because online casino websites bring together many different types of content and player services. Way casino, for example, is an online casino website with sections for slots, live dealer games, roulette, blackjack, poker, baccarat and other casino content. This illustrates the range of areas that operators need to consider separately when assessing how AI could be introduced into customer-facing services.

The Act also prohibits certain AI uses that exploit vulnerabilities connected with age, disability or a person’s social or economic situation when the legal conditions are met. Organising a game catalogue is therefore different from using AI to pressure a vulnerable person into spending more.

What the Rules Mean for Bonuses

The AI Act does not determine wagering requirements, bonus values or deposit conditions. Those matters remain subject to gambling law, consumer rules and licence conditions. Its relevance begins when AI helps decide who receives an offer or how strongly a user is encouraged to respond.

Operators using automated marketing should understand which information drives those decisions. Campaigns based on spending patterns, deposits or behavioural signals deserve scrutiny because personalisation must not become a means of exploiting vulnerability.

AI literacy requirements have applied since 2 February 2025. Providers and deployers must take measures to support suitable AI literacy among people operating these systems, so relevant staff should understand what a tool does, its limits and when human judgement is needed.

AI Transparency Is More Visible in 2026

Article 50 transparency obligations started to apply on 2 August 2026. Providers of certain interactive AI systems must ensure that people are informed when they are interacting directly with AI unless this is obvious. An automated customer-service chatbot is a clear example.

Article 50 also covers certain AI-generated or manipulated content. Some providers have marking duties, while deployers face disclosure requirements for categories including deepfakes and certain AI-generated text on matters of public interest. Not every automated casino message therefore needs an AI label.

The AI Act sits alongside existing rules. Regulated online casinos may still need to comply with national gambling law, licence conditions, the GDPR and consumer-protection requirements. Meeting an AI Act obligation does not replace these separate duties.

Player Protection Requires Practical Controls

A useful first step is to identify where AI is actually used. Customer support, recommendations, marketing, fraud checks and content generation serve different purposes, so each use should be assessed separately.

Operators should keep records of the tools they use, who is responsible for them and what information affects automated decisions. Human review is useful where an outcome may affect a player in an unexpected or sensitive way.

For players, the practical result should be clearer AI interactions and protection against prohibited manipulation or exploitation. For operators, the 2026 rules make transparent communication, staff understanding and careful oversight more important whenever AI is used in customer-facing casino services.
